Handovers that survive night shift
Day teams write notes for people who share their context. Night teams need the job to stand alone — here is a practical minimum set of fields.
A handover that works at 10:00 often fails at 22:00. The day writer can wave someone over; the night reader cannot. When we facilitate Handover Clarity Workshops, we push teams toward a short list that travels with the job:
- What “done enough to start” means for this job type
- Which parts or materials are already staged, and where
- The customer promise that must not be broken overnight
- Who to contact only if a defined exception appears
Resist the urge to invent a novel. Two clean paragraphs beat a paragraph buried in twelve optional fields. Trial the list on the messiest Friday night you have, then trim whatever nobody used.
